Acid Reflux Heartburn and Other Symptoms
If you suffer from acid reflux, heartburn is most likely a common occurrence. While not everyone who has acid reflux suffers from heartburn, most of them do. Also sometimes called indigestion, this burning sensation in the chest can mimic cardiac problems and scare the wits out of someone who has it for the first time. Always seek medical attention for chest pain, as its better to be safe than sorry. In addition to heartburn, there are other symptoms that can go along with the condition of acid reflux.
For example, some sufferers experience regurgitation of a burning acid in their throat or mouth. Dyspepsia is another common side effect, which is the medical way of saying upset stomach or indigestion. You may experience nausea, bloating, burping or hiccuping and pain in the top region of the stomach area. Safe to say, you should see your doctor if you are chronically dealing with heartburn, regurgitation, stomach problems or related symptoms. Reflux that is not dealt with can cause damage to the stomach and esophagus. The worst case scenario from untreated reflux is esophageal cancer which is rare but does sometimes occur.
Sometimes the symptoms can be a sign of GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. When it comes to heartburn, GERD is not always manifested in this way. Sometimes, a seemingly unrelated symptom can point to this disease. GERD symptoms can include a feeling of something stuck in the throat, a hoarse voice, a sore throat, the feeling of constantly needing to clear the throat, and sometimes heartburn but not always. GERD is more chronic than simple reflux, and often requires prescription medication and/or lifestyle changes to manage.
When dealing with acid reflux, heartburn, regurgitation, upset stomach or any other related symptoms there are several things you can do. For mild cases, acid neutralizers, also known as antacids, can reduce the amount of stomach acid and calm the discomfort caused by reflux. Antacid examples include Milk of Magnesia, Tums and Rolaids to name a few. PPI drugs can also be of assistance. These are proton pump inhibitors, which actually reduce the amount of gastric acid produced thus reducing the chance of reflux. There are also certain foods, beverages and spices those with GERD or reflux should avoid. Your doctor can give you more information about relieving the problem.
