The Acid Reflux Hiatal Hernia Connection

In the simplest terms, a hernia occurs when a part of the body is pushed somewhere it's not supposed to be. There is a definite acid reflux hiatal hernia connection. There are two main types of hiatal hernias a person can get. The first is called the sliding hernia. This kind of hernia is quite common and happens when the area of the esophagus that connects to the stomach slides upward via the hiatus, hence the name hiatal hernia.

The other type of hiatal hernia is the paraesophageal hernia. This is a more rare, yet more serious type of hiatal hernia that can cut off blood supply to the stomach. For the purposes of this article we will be discussing the sliding hernia and how it relates to acid reflux. If you have this kind of hernia, it is likely you are experiencing symptoms of acid reflux because of the esophageal position. These symptoms can vary widely and may include but are not limited to heartburn, regurgitation, sore throat, dry cough and difficulty swallowing. Some people have acid reflux and never experience heartburn or sour stomach.

The good news is that a hiatal hernia and acid reflux can usually be managed very well with dietary and lifestyle changes. First and foremost, see your doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment method. Then, you may want to keep a food journal to track which foods trigger reflux pain. Common triggers include tomatoes, citrus fruits, peppermint and alcoholic beverages. Smoking is a trigger also because it causes a variety of detrimental effects, including weakening the lower esophageal sphincter muscle. Acid reflux is only one of many health reasons to give up cigarettes for good. Staying hydrated with non-carbonated beverages can help keep acid down.

You may be referred to a specialist who can examine you more thoroughly with sophisticated imaging techniques such as the endoscopy. In some cases medication and/or surgery may be require to fix the problem, however as previously mentioned a change in diet and lifestyle can work for many.
