Types of Acid Reflux Medication
If you are one of the many sufferers of acid reflux, you will be glad to hear there are various types of acid reflux medication designed to help alleviate this condition. There are also ways of controlling acid reflux symptoms without medication, such as with diet and lifestyle changes. This may not work for every reflux sufferer, and that is why there are many acid reflux medications and GERD medications available to provide relief. GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease and is a chronic condition. An ear, nose and throat specialist or ENT can diagnose this condition through examination and imaging tests.
One type of medicine that may help is the acid neutralizer. These are available readily over the counter and come in both liquid and chewable forms. Examples of acid neutralizers would be Milk of Magnesia, Rolaids, Tums and related products. They are products that are used when symptoms arise, and take a few minutes to provide relief. Sometimes, these over the counter acid neutralizers may not be enough for moderate to severe cases of acid reflux. There is another kind of medication called the proton pump inhibitor, abbreviated PPI.
Proton pump inhibitors actually reduce the amount of stomach acid produced. They actually block the production of gastric acid in the stomach's parietal cells. These medicines are considered well tolerated because there are millions of cells producing acid, therefore the PPI medications cannot completely eliminate the acid needed for proper digestion. Prilosec is an over the counter PPI that you can find at most any drugstore or pharmacy. The various other PPI acid reflux medications like Prevacid, for example, must be prescribed by your doctor.
Acid reflux medication can be a great source of relief for people who suffer with the uncomfortable symptoms of this disorder. Symptoms of acid reflux include heartburn, regurgitation, a feeling of something in the throat, hoarseness of voice and frequent hiccuping and/or burping. Some people get reflux every now and then and can settle the problem with an acid neutralizer, while others suffer chronically and take a PPI as directed by their physician. Only the most severe and untreatable cases of GERD and acid reflux require surgery to remedy the condition. If you are unsure of which medication is right for you, ask your physician or pharmacist for recommendation.
