Remedies for Acid Reflux Pain
There are lots of people that suffer with acid reflux pain. The number one symptom of this condition is heartburn. This feels like a burning pain in the chest. You might also experience the regurgitation of sour liquid into your throat or mouth, although not always. Acid reflux sore throat is also a possible symptom, especially if the acid comes up to your throat. Acid reflux throat pain is quite common and can be painful, but it can also be treated with the right methods. From natural remedies to prescription medications there is something for everyone.
When dealing with acid reflux, esophagus muscles and how they operate can play a large role in this issue. There are certain foods and beverages that weaken the esophageal sphincter muscles. Peppermint and garlic fall into this category. Smoking cigarettes also weakens the muscles. Spicy and acidic foods can also make reflux a lot worse. It helps to keep a journal of what and when you eat and when you experience pain related to acid reflux. If you eat three meals a day, try breaking them into six smaller ones. Consuming a smaller amount of food at each meal can help reduce reflux pain.
You may recognize triggers that cause the pain. In this case all you might need to do is eliminate them. For example, if you get heartburn every time you eat pizza, this is something to avoid or have only once in awhile. Some people have silent reflux that doesn't cause heartburn, but may cause an unexplained sore throat in the mornings due to the burning acid. Elevating the bed at the top can help acid from rising too far. Also, drinking enough water and using antacids when necessary can help.
Another thing that can help alleviate acid reflux pain is a class of medications called PPIs or proton pump inhibitors. These medications help reduce the amount of stomach acid that is produced by the cells of the stomach responsible for this task. PPIs cannot eliminate all the acid, so they are generally considered safe for most people. Sometimes it does take time for these medications to work so you should definitely follow the lifestyle changes and pain relief methods recommended by your doctor. If your pain is very severe you may be sent for imaging tests or to an ear nose and throat specialist for more in-depth diagnosis and treatment.
