For anyone who has experienced the pain of acid reflux, it is comforting to know there are cures out there. To find acid reflux relief you can try various medications and lifestyle changes. First it is important to get the proper diagnosis before trying any kind of treatment, save for the intermittent case of heartburn that is cured with a few antacid tablets. If your reflux lasts for more than a week make an appointment with your physician. Many people are hesitant to see the doctor for heartburn but it is definitely something you should do.

Symptoms of acid reflux include a burning in the chest commonly known as heartburn, burping and hiccuping, the regurgitation of sour acid into the throat or mouth, trouble swallowing and throat discomfort. There are various triggers of reflux so it helps to keep a food and acid reflux journal so you can work on finding your acid reflux cure. Trigger foods include anything acidic like raw onions, tomatoes and citrus. Mint, alcohol, soft drinks and cigarettes also make acid reflux worse so avoid these things.

The avoidance of trigger foods can be a cure for acid reflux, especially for mild to moderate cases. Elevating the head of your bed can also help the acid from rising in your esophagus. Making sure you get enough water each day is helpful also. If you need a medical acid reflux cure, check with your doctor. He or she can recommend a PPI drug or an acid neutralizer. PPI stands for proton pump inhibitor and helps reduce the amount of acid produced. Examples of these drugs include Prilosec and Prevacid. Acid neutralizers help to reduce acid that is already there and include antacids like Rolaids and Tums.

If you cannot find acid reflux relief, you may have GERD. This stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease and is more chronic and serious, but treatable. For mild cases, you may be able to cure GERD with the same methods used for acid reflux. The symptoms of GERD are also the same, although there may not be regurgitation or even heartburn. In rare cases the only symptoms are the feeling of a lump in the throat, hoarse voice and/or trouble swallowing. After being diagnosed with this condition by a specialist or physician make sure to ask any questions you may have and find out what to do for GERD relief.
