When Should You Consider Acid Reflux Surgery?
A common health problem in today's society is acid reflux. This condition can range from mild and occasional to severe and chronic. While there is such a thing as acid reflux surgery, it is certainly not the first course of action a physician would take when presented with a new case of acid reflux. There are certain people who make good candidates when it comes to surgery for acid reflux, but they are the minority. In most cases, other treatments are safer and as effective.
How do you know if you make a good candidate for surgery or not? It helps to understand the symptoms. Acid reflux causes heartburn, another name for a searing, burning sensation in the chest. It can also cause regurgitation, hoarseness of the voice and extreme sensitivity to certain foods. For example, people with acid reflux may need to avoid citrus fruits, tomatoes and spicy foods. Sometimes acid reflux is a symptom of GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease.
GERD surgery is also rare, but more common that surgery for common acid reflux. GERD is a chronic condition that can lead to esophageal cancer as a worst case scenario. Surgery for reflux is usually recommended for patients who are required to take medication for the rest of their lives, patients who refuse to take medication, patients who tried medication with no success and those with esophageal damage caused by reflux. If you don't fit into any of these categories, it is likely you can find relief through other means such as dietary changes and medications. There are both prescription and over the counter medicines for acid reflux.
Acid reflux surgery is the last resort for most people. There are so many other options as mentioned previously. Avoiding spicy and acidic foods can help. Elevating the head of your bed is also thought to be an effective remedy. Some people find over the counter medicines like antacids helpful, while others are helped by prescription drugs. One popular type of prescription medication for acid reflux is the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) which you may have seen advertised under the brands Prilosec and Prevacid to name just two. The goal of drugs like these is a long term dramatic reduction in acid production. Definitely make sure to see your doctor if you are suffering from recurring acid reflux.
