What Kind of Acid Reflux Treatment is Right for You?

If you are one of the millions who suffer from the problem of acid reflux, then you will be glad to know there are many acid reflux treatment options that may be right for you. There are also GERD treatments for the more severe condition of gastroesophageal reflux disease. The first thing you should do is see your doctor if you have been experiencing symptoms for longer than two weeks. He or she can either examine you in their office or refer you to an ENT, which is an ear, nose and throat doctor.

One of the easiest and most surprising remedies for reflux is a change in lifestyle and diet. For example, smoking can make the problem worse, so if you smoke, this is yet another good reason to quit. Drinking plenty of water can help keep acid levels down. And of course, avoiding trigger foods can be of tremendous help. For most acid reflux sufferers, acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits make things worse. Other triggers may include spicy foods, garlic, carbonated beverages, alcohol and chocolate. You don't necessarily need to avoid these foods and beverages forever, just dramatically reduce your consumption of them.

A commonly prescribed prescription drug often given as a GERD treatment is the proton pump inhibitor, or PPI. These drugs actually inhibit the production of stomach acid thus reducing the chance it will travel into your esophagus. PPI drugs do not get rid of all your stomach acid, so they are quite safe for most people and do not compromise normal digestion. If you want to try an over the counter PPI medication, take a look at Prilosec, once only available by prescription. Most PPIs like Prevacid must be dispensed via prescription and can be expensive.

Another type of acid reflux treatment is the acid neutralizer. This includes OTC medicines like Tums, Rolaids and Milk of Magnesia. These medications work by calming the stomach and helping neutralize excess acid that can travel up the esophagus. Acid neutralizers are good for intermittent heartburn and may not be an effective treatment for GERD. If you take any kind of over the counter or prescription drugs on a daily basis, ask your doctor about interactions before taking even the mildest OTC medication to make sure it is safe.
