Understanding Infant GERD
If you are a new parent and suspect your baby may have a reflux problem, it is important they be evaluated by their pediatrician. The condition of infant GERD is rather rare, as GERD is more chronic and serious than simple acid reflux. The good news is that even GERD, which stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease, can be treated or even cured. It is uncomfortable, but usually not serious or debilitating. Both adults and infants can suffer from this condition, however most children and teens are not bothered by it.
The majority of babies up to three months of old will spit up, or in scientific terms experience reflux. This is a normal occurrence and not usually anything to worry about. Spitting up often occurs while burping after feeding, which is why burp cloths were invented. Symptoms of a more severe infant acid reflux problem include chronic cough, inadequate feeding, bloody stool and of course spitting up or vomiting. However not all babies with GERD spit up, just as not all adults with the condition experience acid regurgitation.
For infant acid reflux symptoms that seem chronic or especially distressing, see what your pediatrician recommends. The best news of all is that many cases of acid reflux in infants get better as the child grows and no treatment is required. In other words, they simply grow out of the problem. This is even the same with GERD infants, the condition can resolve itself without any kind of medication or surgery. In some cases, a change in formula or feeding patterns may be necessary. Some babies might be lactose intolerant and require a soy formula. This is not always the case, which is why it is so important for the doctor to figure out what is best for your baby as each one is different.
When it comes to acid reflux, infants often have it worse if they take larger amounts of formula at once. So rather than feeding your newborn four ounces you could try feeding two ounces on a more frequent basis. You do not want to underfeed your baby, but overfeeding can make reflux worse. For any suspected case of infant GERD a pediatrician appointment should be made so the doctor can examine your baby, diagnose the problem and recommend a course of treatment or the wait and see approach.
