The Details About Silent Acid Reflux
There is a sneaky type of reflux that can affect you even if you aren't having obvious symptoms. This is called silent acid reflux and although it can be hard to diagnose there are ways to recognize it. When you have this condition, you may experience the majority of your reflux at night while you are sleeping. This might lead to a sore throat or hoarse voice in the morning. You may feel as though there is something in your throat or that your throat needs to be cleared. Other symptoms may include a cough that is dry and difficulty with swallowing.
If you are having these symptoms see your doctor. They may send you to an ear nose and throat specialist or ENT for further analysis. You can have an endoscopy, which can visually identify effects of silent reflux. Once you are diagnosed, there are things you can do to get rid of the problem. You may wonder why you need to treat a silent problem. The reason for this is that left untreated, stomach acid reflux can cause scarring, damage and other long-term problems. GERD, or gastroesophageal disease, can result and some sufferers have Barrett's esophagus, a potential precursor to esophageal cancer.
One way to deal with reflux is to avoid trigger foods. For individuals who don't have lots of symptoms, it can be hard to know which foods set your reflux off. In this case, you may want to avoid the common reflux triggers like spicy foods, fried foods, acidic foods, alcohol, carbonated beverages, peppermint and smoking. These are common reflux triggers for most people. Also, do not eat close to bedtime. Elevating the head of your bed can help keep nighttime acid down where it belongs. These are simple steps that can keep acid reflux from becoming more serious.
There are also medications for silent acid reflux. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) medications like Prevacid and Prilosec can help reduce the amount of acid produced. Acid neutralizers like antacids can reduce the amount of acid that is already in the stomach and soothe gastrointestinal discomfort. In very rare cases, surgery is required. However for most, the right diet and lifestyle changes and possibly the right medication can make a big difference in your reflux disease. As previously mentioned, your doctor can provide you with the information you need to manage your acid reflux.
